Major General (Retd) KM Shafiullah, the Sector-3 commander during Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War, passed away today at the age of 91 while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka. He died around 8:45 am, according to Assistant Director Rashedul Alam of the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR).

Shafiullah had been battling multiple health issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, and fatty liver, and had been hospitalized at the CMH since January 2.

His personal assistant, Ziaur Rahman Moni, confirmed that Shafiullah's first namaz-e-janaza will take place after Zohr prayers at the Kazi Abdul Hamid High School ground in Rupganj, Narayanganj, followed by a second namaz-e-janaza after Asr prayers at the Central Mosque of Dhaka Cantonment.

Born on September 2, 1934, in Rupganj, Narayanganj, Shafiullah played a crucial role in the country's independence struggle. He also served as Bangladesh's army chief until August 24, 1975. After retiring from the army, Shafiullah served as Bangladesh's ambassador to several countries, including Malaysia, Canada, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, from 1976 to 1991.
