Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin announced on Tuesday that the government is actively working to reduce the current 20% reciprocal tariff imposed by the United States on Bangladeshi exports to 15%.

“There is a collective effort at all levels of government to lower the tariff from 20% to 15%,” he said during a press briefing at the Secretariat following a meeting on setting export targets for the 2025–26 fiscal year.

Negotiations with the US are ongoing, and the adjustment could be made before the final agreement is signed, he added.

Bangladesh has already taken several measures to address its trade deficit with the US and remains hopeful these efforts will lead to a favourable outcome. However, he noted that the ultimate decision rests with the US authorities.

Earlier this month, the US reduced tariffs on Bangladeshi goods from 35% to 20% following high-level talks in Washington. Discussions continue, and a deal may be finalised by the end of August. The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) is currently drafting the agreement.

Regarding rising onion prices in the local market, the adviser said import decisions would depend on supply and demand. “Imports won’t be restricted to India alone. Traders can source onions from any country offering lower prices,” he said.

“Our priority is to ensure stable supply and reduce prices. Onions will be imported from wherever competitive rates are available,” he added.

Others present at the briefing included Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission Chairman Dr Moinul Khan, Additional Secretary (Export) Abdur Rahim Khan, Additional Secretary (WTO) Dr Nazneen Kauser Chowdhury, and BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem.
