Country’s Total Voter Count Reaches 12.86 Crore

The total number of registered voters in Bangladesh stood at 12,86,32,555 as of July 31, according to the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat.

EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the number of voters increased by 309,315 between May 14 and July 31.

He disclosed the figures at a briefing at the EC Building in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Sunday.

Akhtar Ahmed said the current voter list would be used for the upcoming local government elections. If the election schedule changes, the Election Commission may issue a supplementary voter list based on any subsequent decision.

He said the rules of conduct for the local government elections had been sent to the Ministry of Law for review.

According to the EC official, the rules cover elections to city corporations, district councils, upazila councils, municipalities and union councils.

He said the proposed legal amendments had not yet been sent to the ministry, as the relevant document was still being processed.

Regarding the presidential election, Akhtar Ahmed said the submission of nomination papers began on Sunday.

He said a BNP delegation collected nomination papers in the morning, while no other party or candidate had collected forms at that time. The BNP had collected two nomination forms, he added.
