The newly formed faction of the Jatiyo Party, led by Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud as chairman and ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader as secretary general, has formally sought the Election Commission’s approval to recognise their committee as the party’s main leadership and to secure the right to use the “plough” election symbol.

On 9 August, the faction held what it described as the party’s 10th National Council in Gulshan, Dhaka, without the participation of the GM Quader-led faction. According to the organisers, around 5,000 councillors from across the country took part and elected Anisul and Ruhul to the top positions through a voice vote.

In a letter to the EC the next day, the faction claimed the council was constitutionally valid and that only their committee holds the legitimate authority over the party’s election symbol. They, however, left the final decision to the commission.

This marks the sixth split in the Jatiyo Party’s history, adding to ongoing internal divisions. EC officials have said the matter will be discussed and resolved in due course.
