The Awami League (AL) has picked the party's Cumilla city unit general secretary Arfanul Haque Rifat as its mayoral candidate for the upcoming Cumilla City Corporation elections slated for June 15.

The decision was taken at a meeting of Awami League's Local Government Public Representative Nomination Board at Ganabhaban this evening.

Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting.

Rifat was among 14 party leaders seeking the party's support to fight Monirul Haque Sakku, the two-time mayor of Cumilla City Corporation (CCC) who will contest the polls as an independent candidate.

AL lawmaker from Cumilla sadar constituency AKM Bahauddin Bahar confirmed the information to BSS.

Apart from Cumilla City Corporation elections, AL announced its candidates for elections to three upazila parishads, six municipalities and 138 union parishads in eighth phase, reports BSS.

The deadline for submission of nomination papers for taking part in Cumilla City Corporation elections is May 17, scrutiny will be held on May 19 and last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 26.

The polls will be held on June 15 next.
