The election in Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi–Jhenaigati) constituency has been suspended following the death of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami–nominated parliamentary candidate and district Jamaat secretary Alhaj Nuruzzaman Badal.

The development was confirmed on Wednesday morning by the returning officer and Sherpur district commissioner, Tarfadar Mahmudur Rahman.

He said electoral law stipulates that if a validly nominated candidate dies after the withdrawal deadline and before polling day, the election process in the concerned constituency must be cancelled immediately.

In line with the provision, preparations are underway to issue a public notice formally suspending the election. A fresh schedule for voting in the constituency will be announced later, he added.

Nuruzzaman Badal, 51, passed away early Wednesday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mymensingh. He died around 1:30am due to kidney-related complications, according to district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Md Hafizur Rahman.

He said the Jamaat leader had been suffering from kidney ailments for a long time.
