
“The election to Sherpur-3 constituency will be postponed. Fresh proceedings will begin there,” Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud told UNB.
Mohammad Nuruzzaman Badal passed away early Wednesday. He breathed his last at around 1:30am while undergoing treatment for kidney complications at a hospital in Mymensingh.
According to the Article 17 of the Representation of the People Order 1972, “If a validly nominated candidate who has not withdrawn his candidature dies, 1 [or if his candidature is cancelled under clause (2) of Article 91E,] the Returning Officer shall, by public notice, terminate the proceedings relating to that election.”
The same article also states that where proceedings relating to an election have been terminated under clause (1), fresh proceedings shall be commenced in accordance with the provisions of this Order as if for a new election.
Provided that it shall not be necessary for the other contesting candidates to file fresh nomination papers or make a further deposit under Article, the article added.
Badal and four other candidates were contesting the 13th parliamentary election scheduled for February 12 from Sherpur-3.
Four other candidates are BNP’s Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel, Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Abu Taleb Md Saifuddin, Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal’s (Marxist) Md Mizanur Rahman and independent contestant Md Aminul Islam.
The Election Commission on December 11 announced the polls schedule to arrange the parliamentary election and the referendum on the July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order simultaneously on February 12, 2026, reports UNB.
