Environment Dept flattens 2 illegal lead factories in Tangail
Dhaka, Oct 23 - The Department of Environment (DoE), in conjunction with the upazila administration, demolished two illegal lead factories in the Sagardighi area of Ghatail, Tangail, on Wednesday.
Led by Executive Magistrate Kishore Kumar Das and guided by Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the operation followed complaints from YouthNet Global about the factories' toxic emissions, which had caused serious health issues and environmental damage in nearby villages.
The factories, which had been burning old batteries to produce lead, were linked to respiratory problems among locals and the deaths of livestock and wildlife. Despite past complaints, no action had been taken until this operation, during which no factory owners were present.
DoE Deputy Director Mia Mahmudul Haque assured that they would continue such initiatives to combat illegal activities.
Local residents welcomed the demolition but called for ongoing monitoring to prevent future violations. - UNB
