Sylhet, Aug 18 – Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) has been transferred amid widespread criticism over the recent white stone looting incident in Bholaganj.
The Public Administration Ministry issued a gazette notification in this regard on Monday.
Meanwhile, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad was made an Officer on Special Duty (OSD).
Allegations of failure and negligence were found against them in preventing looting.
Companiganj UNO Azizunnahar has been transferred to Fenchuganj Upazila in Sylhet. Fenchuganj UNO Shafiqul Islam will be replaced Azizunnahar.
Azizunnahar joined as UNO of Companiganj upazila on January 14.
Recently, there has been nationwide criticism regarding the looting of stones in Sada Pathor area.
On August 12, the local administration formed a three-member probe body to look into the incident.
UNO Azizunnahar was included as a member of the committee.
There are 51 quarries (specific locations for extracting stones and sand) across the country.
Among them, there are eight stone quarries in Kanai Ghat, Companyganj, Gowainghat and Jaintapur in Sylhet district.
Besides, stones were available in Sada Pathor, Jaflong, Bichanakandi and Uthmachora, which are known as tourist spots.
A task force has recovered 250,000 cubic feet of illegally extracted stone during a raid on a stone crusher mill and several residences in the Dhopagul area of Sylhet Sadar Upazila till Sunday. - UNB
