Chhayanaut, the renowned cultural institution of Bangladesh, welcomed Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bangla New Year, with its signature celebration at Ramna Batamul in the capital this morning.
As the first light of dawn broke over Ramna Park, Chhayanaut artists greeted the New Year with songs and poetry beneath the sprawling banyan tree, setting a tone of hope and renewal.
This year’s festivities embraced the theme "Amar Mukti Aloy Aloy" ("My liberation lies in light"), reflecting messages of hope, resilience, and harmony.
The programme began at 6:15am on a grand semi-circular stage, 72 feet long and 30 feet wide, stretching from east to west at the iconic Ramna Batamul. Crowds from across the city gathered even before sunrise, joining in songs and dances to celebrate the dawn of the Bengali year.
Chhayanaut’s executive president, Sarwar Ali, addressed the audience, while performers delivered 12 solo songs, three poetry recitations, and nine choruses, focusing on themes of light, nature, humanity, and patriotism.
In a solemn moment, attendees observed a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs of Palestine.
The event concluded with a united rendition of the national anthem.
Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar broadcast the event live, alongside Chhayanaut’s own streaming on YouTube and Facebook.
Security was tightly coordinated by government agencies, Chhayanaut volunteers, and members of the 13th Hussars Open Rover Scout Group, ensuring a safe and festive atmosphere.
