1000 pieces of banned Chinese gillnets seized and destroyed

Patuakhali: The Upazila Administration and Fisheries Department have seized 1000 pieces of banned Chinese gillnets in a drive in Kalapara, Patuakhali. Later, the seized nets were burned and destroyed in public.

The drive was conducted in front of the Press Club on Surendra Mohan Chowdhury Road in the municipality on Tuesday afternoon. The Executive Magistrate, officials of the Fisheries Department, members of the law enforcement agencies and volunteer members of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali were present in the drive.

Kalapara Deputy Assistant Fisheries Officer Md. Mohsin said that the production of domestic fish and aquatic biodiversity are being severely damaged due to indiscriminate fishing using banned Chinese gillnets. For this reason, the government has banned the use, sale and stocking of such nets.

Kalapara Assistant Commissioner Land and Executive Magistrate Yasin Sadek said that 1000 pieces of nets seized during the operation were immediately burned and destroyed. He said that such operations will continue in the future. - Gofran Palash,
