Fishing in Kaptai Lake; Tk 30 lakh earned on first day

Fishing in Kaptai Lake has resumed, and Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) Rangamati Marketing Centre has earned Tk 30 lakh on the first day.



Fishing in Kaptai Lake has resumed, and Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) Rangamati Marketing Centre has earned Tk 30 lakh on the first day.

BFDC Rangamati Marketing Centre Manager Lt. Commander Touhidul Islam confirmed this on Thursday night.

He said about 160 tonnes of fish were caught from Kaptai Lake till Thursday night, from which Tk 30 lakh was collected. Most of the fishes caught till Thursday night were Kachki and Chapila.

According to sources in BFDC Rangamati Marketing Centre, 17,870  tonnes of fish were caught from Kaptai Lake in 2021-22 from which Tk 11,68,79,000 was collected.

Fishing in the lake remains halted for three months- 1 May to 31 July - every year for the purpose of breeding carps.

However, this year, the ban period was extended due to the lack of sufficient water in the lake. 

This year, 60 tonnes of fish hatchlings were released into the lake.

Kaptai Lake is the largest lake in South East Asia.
