Torrential rains inundate Khagrachhari, trap hundreds of families

The low-lying areas of Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari district have been inundated due to incessant torrential rains for a few days. 

Thousands of people from seven-eight villages of Merung union of the upazila have been marooned. 

Traffic movement on the Dighinala-Langadu road has been stopped as the roads adjacent to the Baramerung Steel Bridge area and Dangalbazar area have submerged due to heavy downpours.

The water level has been rising rapidly since Monday afternoon due to incessant rains. More than 300 families of Colony-1, Colony-2, Chittagong Para, Bazar Area, Hajachara, Sobanpur, Betchari area of Merung Union were marooned.

Mahmuda Akter Lucky, chairman of Merung Union Parishad, said five shelter homes have been kept ready for the flood-hit families considering the flood situation.

More than 50 people have taken shelter at Choto Merung Bazar Government Primary School centre by Monday afternoon.

If the rains continue, the number of families trapped in the water will increase by Tuesday, she added.

Meanwhile, UP Chairman Mahmuda said food arrangements have been made by the administration for the shelter centres, reports UNB.
