Recent flooding in eastern Bangladesh has led to an estimated damage of Tk 14,421.46 crore, according to a study by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD).

The findings were unveiled at a media briefing titled "Recent Flood Damage and Rehabilitation Process in Eastern Region: CPD's Analysis," held at the CPD office in Dhaka on Sunday.

This staggering figure represents 1.81 percent of the national budget for the fiscal year 2024-25. In terms of economic impact, it equates to 0.29 percent of the provisional GDP for FY24 and 0.26 percent of the projected GDP for FY25.

The floods, which began on August 19, 2024, were triggered by relentless heavy rainfall and upstream water flow, affecting 11 districts, including Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Feni, Khagrachhari, Cox's Bazar, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram, Lakshmipur, and Brahmanbaria.

The CPD assessment revealed that the agriculture and forestry sectors bore the brunt of the disaster, suffering damages amounting to Tk 5,169.71 crore, or 35.85 percent of the total damage. The findings underscore the urgent need for comprehensive rehabilitation efforts to support affected communities and restore livelihoods.
