Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said his side’s dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over Cape Verde in the World Cup last 32 proved that no knockout match is easy, after the defending champions were pushed to the limit by the tournament’s surprise package.

Argentina entered Friday’s clash as overwhelming favourites but were forced into a gruelling battle as Cape Verde twice fought back to level the score and dragged the contest deep into extra time.

“That was for those who thought we had an easy path,” Scaloni told reporters after the match.

“We deserved to win and progress, but it was an extremely difficult game.”

The reigning champions had to dig deep as the African side showed remarkable resilience and refused to back down despite Argentina’s attacking pressure.

Scaloni praised his players for their determination, saying they showed strong character under pressure.

“The team showed its resilience and character today,” he said.

“There are areas where we can improve, but the players gave everything. They are exhausted after extra time, with cramps and fatigue, but when they play with heart, they can overcome anything.”

Cape Verde came close to producing one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history after left-back Sidny Lopes Cabral scored a stunning curling effort into the top corner during extra time to level the match once again.

Scaloni admitted the goal heightened tension on the Argentine bench.

“I just wanted the match to end,” he said.

“You saw the incredible goal they scored. Everyone expected an easy game, but we knew it would not be simple.”

Despite the intense pressure of being favourites, Scaloni insisted expectations did not negatively affect his players.

“The best thing about this team is that it keeps pushing forward,” he said.

“The players continue attacking with passion and belief. We rose to the challenge.”

He also pointed to difficult pitch conditions, saying the surface made it harder for Argentina to play their usual style.

“The pitch felt unusual. The ball wasn’t moving as we are used to, which made things more difficult,” he added.

Reflecting on the hard-fought victory, Scaloni said the match perfectly captured Argentina’s footballing identity.

“What does it mean to be Argentine? To suffer,” he said.

“Cape Verde gave everything, and in football that can close any gap. Our fans understand that nothing comes easy for Argentina.”

“There is something special about this jersey. We will keep moving forward, and this match has only made us stronger.”
