Lionel Messi has finally spoken about the famous viral photograph of himself with Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal just days before they face each other in the FIFA World Cup final.

The iconic image was taken in 2007 at Barcelona's stadium during a UNICEF charity calendar photoshoot. It captured a young Messi bathing an infant Yamal—an ordinary moment that would later become one of football's most remarkable photographs. Nearly 18 years later, the two are now preparing to meet on opposite sides in the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain.

Speaking at FIFA's Fanatics Fest in New York on Friday, Messi reflected on the extraordinary journey behind the picture.

"That photo is truly unbelievable. He was just a baby when we took it, and now we're both playing in a World Cup final. It's incredible to think about," Messi said.

The Argentine captain also praised Yamal's rapid rise, describing him as one of the world's finest young footballers.

"He's already one of the best players in the world. I wish him every success because his success is also good for Barcelona. But in the final, we'll do everything we can to stop him from playing at his best," Messi said.

He added that Spain are much more than just Yamal.

"Spain have an outstanding team, not just Lamine. But we also have our own strengths and weapons, and we'll be ready for the challenge."

Messi also described the 19-year-old as a future global superstar.

"His entire career is still ahead of him, and I wish him all the best. But this time, we'll fight with everything we have to make sure he doesn't become world champion."

Spain midfielder Mikel Merino admitted he was stunned when he first saw the now-famous photograph.

"When I first saw it, I honestly thought it had been created with AI. It didn't seem real at all," Merino said.

"To have a picture featuring one of the greatest players in history with someone who could become one of the game's future greats is simply incredible. Hopefully, we'll witness a fantastic and memorable World Cup final between these two stars."
