Veteran coach Lucescu leaves struggling Dynamo Kyiv
Paris, 4 Nov - Mircea Lucescu has resigned as Dynamo Kyiv's head coach the Ukrainian club announced on Saturday, the day after a 1-0 home loss to Shakhtar Donetsk.
Dynamo announced that goalkeeping coach and former Dynamo player Oleksandr Shovkovskiy would take over.
Lucescu, a 78-year-old Romanian, had been at the helm since 2020 but after the 16-time Ukrainian champions Dynamo finished only fourth last season the club have made a disappointing start to the new campaign.
They are seventh in the league and have been eliminated from the Europa Conference League play-offs and the Ukrainian Cup.
Under Lucescu, the club achieved the league and cup double in 2021, but the Romanian coach never won the unanimous approval of the fans because of his long spell at arch-rivals Shakhtar from 2004 to 2016.
Shovkovskiy, 48, who came though the youth system and played 638 games in goal for the club from 1993 to 2017 also stood in as head coach last season when Lucescu had an operation on his leg.
