Bangladesh players celebrate their emphatic 4-0 win over Nepal to clinch the SAFF U-20 Women’s Championship title at Bashundhara Kings Arena in Dhaka.
Bangladesh clinched the SAFF U-20 Women’s Championship title in style with a commanding 4-0 victory over Nepal in the decisive final match at the Bashundhara Kings Arena in Dhaka on Monday.
Going into the match, Bangladesh needed only a draw to secure the championship, while Nepal required a win to lift the trophy. However, the hosts, who dominated the tournament from the outset, sealed the title emphatically to finish as unbeaten champions.
Forward Mosammat Sagorika, returning from a three-match suspension, opened the scoring in the 8th minute. Collecting a precise through ball, she sprinted past the Nepalese defenders and calmly slotted the ball past the advancing goalkeeper to put Bangladesh ahead.
Sagorika had earlier been in fine form, netting a hat-trick against Sri Lanka and scoring against Nepal before receiving a red card in that match due to an altercation with Nepal’s defender Simran.
Despite Nepal's efforts to fight back, including a close attempt in the 15th minute when a shot struck the side post, Bangladesh maintained control. In the 19th minute, Munki Akter came close to doubling the lead, but Nepal’s Anisha Rai cleared her shot off the goal line.
Bangladesh went into the break with a slender 1-0 lead but stepped up their attack in the second half, scoring three more goals to complete a convincing 4-0 victory and secure the title without a single defeat.
Before kickoff, both teams observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the military plane crash that occurred earlier in the day in Dhaka’s Uttara area.
This year’s triumph erased memories of last year’s controversial final, where Bangladesh were named joint champions after a confusing coin toss decision. Unlike that uncertain ending, this victory was clear and dominant.
Following India’s withdrawal from the tournament, Nepal emerged as Bangladesh’s main challengers. However, the hosts proved superior in every department, topping the table and lifting the trophy with confidence.
Bangladesh’s U-20 women’s team now stand proudly as SAFF champions, marking a major achievement in their growing football journey.
