Ten police officers were killed and seven wounded in an attack on a check post near the Afghan border, officials confirmed Friday. The assault, claimed by the Pakistani Taliban, involved a heavy exchange of fire that lasted nearly an hour.

Approximately 20 to 25 militants launched the attack on a Frontier Constabulary post in the Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. A senior intelligence officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, "Ten Frontier Constabulary personnel were martyred during the attack."

The violence occurred around 70 kilometers (43 miles) from the Afghan border. A separate attack late Thursday night in the Khyber district also resulted in the death of one policeman.

Militancy in Pakistan has surged since the Afghan Taliban took control in 2021, with the Pakistani Taliban intensifying its focus on security forces. A senior official from the Frontier Constabulary corroborated the details of the recent attack, also on condition of anonymity.

Last month, a police convoy escorting foreign ambassadors was targeted in a roadside blast that killed another officer. The Pakistani Taliban has historical ties to Afghanistan and shares ideological similarities with the Afghan Taliban. Islamabad accuses various militant groups, many linked to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), of launching attacks from across the border, a claim the Taliban authorities in Kabul deny.
