Measles Cases in Bangladesh Jump Sharply: DGHS

Measles infections among children have surged sharply across Bangladesh in the first three months of this year, with 676 cases reported nationwide, according to data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The figure marks a dramatic rise compared with previous years. During the same period last year, only nine cases were recorded, while the number stood at 64 in 2024.

The latest data indicates a 75-fold increase compared with last year and nearly an 11-fold rise from 2024.

No official information is currently available on deaths linked to the disease.

According to the DGHS, Dhaka division recorded the highest number of cases, with 245 infections, accounting for 36.24 percent of the national total.

Rajshahi division reported 137 cases, or 20.26 percent, followed by Chattogram with 93 cases, representing 13.75 percent.

Mymensingh recorded 80 cases, while both Barishal and Khulna reported 51 cases each.

Sylhet recorded 13 cases, while Rangpur reported the lowest number with just six infections.

Health officials said the data reflects only cases treated at government hospitals, meaning the actual number of infections may be significantly higher.
