The deadly spread of dengue continues to grip Bangladesh, claiming nine more lives in the 24 hours till Sunday morning — the second highest daily death toll recorded this year.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest fatalities have raised the nationwide death count to 212 since the beginning of 2025.
During the same period, 1,042 new dengue cases were reported across the country, pushing the total number of confirmed infections this year to 49,907.
Among the latest victims, seven deaths occurred under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), while one each was reported in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Chattogram division outside city corporation areas.
The DGHS report showed a widespread surge, with 195 cases detected in Barishal division (outside city areas), 104 in Chattogram, 201 in Dhaka, 198 under DNCC, 121 under DSCC, 72 in Khulna, 41 in Mymensingh, five in Sylhet, 23 in Rangpur, and 82 in Rajshahi division (outside city areas).
Currently, 2,439 patients are undergoing treatment at hospitals nationwide, underscoring the disease’s ongoing threat to public health.
Health experts have called for intensified awareness campaigns, community clean-up drives, and sustained preventive actions to curb the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, the carriers of dengue.
Bangladesh recorded its deadliest day of the year on 21 September, marking the highest number of fatalities in a single day.
Last year, dengue claimed 575 lives across the country — the highest annual death toll on record — a grim reminder of the need for constant vigilance and preparedness.
