Canada has lost its status as a measles-free country, the government said Monday, after a year-long outbreak driven largely by vaccine scepticism.

The Pan American Health Organization informed Canada that the country “no longer holds measles elimination status” due to the continued transmission of the same measles virus strain for over a year.

Canada’s federal health agency described the loss of status as a significant public health setback, highlighting the ongoing challenges of controlling preventable diseases.
