139 children killed 40 women murdered during Jan-March 2024

Forty women were murdered by their husbands while 139 children were killed, 25 of them after physical torture, in Bangladesh during the first quarter of the current calendar year, according to a report prepared by the Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK).

During the period 137 cases of domestic violence, 114 rape incidents and three murders after rape were recorded.

Violence against children totaled 186 while 18 of them were subjected to sexual violence by stalkers. 

81 journalists were victims of harassment or torture during the period when while 35 people died in jail custody, the report said.

The report made mention of a journalist being sentenced to six months jail by setting up a mobile court for seeking information on 10 March. ASK’s protested and condemned the incident. Shafiuzzaman, Nakla Upazila correspondent of Desh Rupantar newspaper had sought information about purchase of computers and laptols under an ADP project. As he protested noncompliance with the demand the Upazila Nirbahi Officer set up a mobile court and sentenced him to jail, the report said.

On March 18 a child was shot dead by Indian BSF, the report said.
