Bangladesh Delivers First Humanitarian Aid to Myanmar

In a display of solidarity with Myanmar, Bangladesh has swiftly responded to the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck northern Myanmar on March 28.

On Sunday, two Bangladesh Air Force and Army aircraft (C-130 and CASA) landed at Yangon Airport, delivering 16.5 metric tonnes of vital humanitarian relief. The shipment included tents, food packets, medicines, clean water, hygiene kits, plastic sheets, mosquito nets, solar lights, and other essential supplies. These initial consignments are just the beginning, with more aid expected to follow.

The death toll from the earthquake has risen to 1,644, leaving widespread devastation in its wake.

At a simple handover ceremony at Yangon Airport, Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Myanmar, Monwar Hossain, formally presented the relief materials to Yangon’s Chief Minister, Soe Thein. The Ambassador expressed Bangladesh’s continued commitment to assisting Myanmar during this difficult time.

In addition to the relief materials, Bangladesh is ready to deploy a specialized 50-member rescue team, including 21 medical professionals, engineers, and fire service and civil defense personnel, to support ongoing search and rescue operations, the Ambassador confirmed.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this tragedy," Ambassador Hossain said. "As a close neighbor, Bangladesh stands by Myanmar, committed to offering help and support in their time of need."

This gesture underscores Bangladesh’s strong humanitarian commitment, reinforcing its role as a supportive neighbor in times of crisis.
