The Bangladesh Navy ship BNS Somudra Avijan arrived in Yangon on April 12, 2025, delivering the second phase of humanitarian aid to Myanmar’s earthquake victims. The ship carried over 120 metric tons of relief supplies, including 75.5 metric tons of dry food, water, hygiene kits, tents, and emergency materials, according to a press release.
At a ceremony held at the MITT jetty, Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Myanmar, Dr. M. Monwar Hossain, handed over the relief items to Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein. Dr. Hossain emphasized Bangladesh’s commitment as a responsible neighbor and disaster management leader, standing by Myanmar’s people in their time of need.
The Ambassador also praised the Bangladesh Armed Forces for their ongoing efforts to deliver relief and provide medical and rescue services in Naypyidaw from April 1 to 10. He expressed gratitude to the captain and crew of BNS Somudra Avijan for their role in ensuring the timely delivery of these vital supplies.
In addition, 800 boxes of hygiene kits were handed over to the Myanmar Red Cross at the ceremony.
This consignment is the largest aid shipment Bangladesh has sent to Myanmar this year. Earlier shipments in the first phase, delivered by Bangladesh Air Force and Army aircraft, provided a total of 31.5 metric tons of relief materials.
Myanmar government officials, including Brigadier General Md. Aftab Hossain, as well as other diplomats and the ship's crew, attended the event.
