The United States is expanding its efforts to restrict Iran’s trade and military supply routes beyond the existing naval blockade, with a new task force targeting the movement of weapons and other restricted materials across the country’s land borders and the Caspian Sea.
The US military announced the formation of the task force, named “Task Force Iron Gate”, on Saturday (November 7). It will work to prevent the movement of advanced weapons systems and other materials subject to sanctions into Iran.
The task force will be based in Tampa, Florida, and coordinate with various US government agencies.
Alongside weapons transfers, its responsibilities will include restricting the movement of dual-use technologies, which can serve both civilian and military purposes, as well as what Washington describes as illicit financial flows.
The initiative marks a new effort by Washington to increase pressure on Tehran more than eight months after the United States and Israel began their war against Iran.
The move follows a months-long US naval blockade targeting Iranian ports. Washington says the maritime restrictions have significantly limited Iran’s ability to export crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz and the Arabian Sea.
The US military has also carried out strikes that it says have significantly damaged Iran’s conventional military capabilities.
Despite those developments, Iran continues to pose a major regional security challenge, while its leadership has tightened domestic control, according to assessments cited in reports on the latest US measures.
The new task force is intended to further restrict Iran’s access to military equipment, sensitive technologies and financial resources that Washington believes could help Tehran rebuild its weapons production facilities and replenish its military capabilities.
