Intl Day of Older Persons observed

Dhaka, Oct 01 - The 34th International Day of Older Persons was observed in the country as elsewhere in the world with the theme “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide”.

The United Nations decided to observe the International Day of Older Persons on October 01 in 1990. The day is being observed since 1991 to create awareness to ensure rights of the elderly people worldwide. 

To mark the day, Bangladesh Elderly Journalists Welfare Council hold a discussion meeting and rally today at the National Press Club. Speaking at the program the elderly and unemployed newsmen urged the government to give minimum 20 thousand taka as allowance per month to the journalists above 60-year old. 

Among others, council President AKM Korom Ali  and General Secretary Sikder Abdus Salam spoke on the occasion.
