Trump’s Second-Term Promises: Immigration, Trade, and Wars

With his return to the White House looming, President-elect Donald Trump has outlined ambitious and contentious plans for his second term, signaling swift action on everything from deportations to culture wars. Trump’s promises — often dramatic but sometimes vague — are expected to be pursued primarily through executive orders.

Immigration Crackdown

Trump has reiterated his hardline stance on undocumented immigration, pledging to launch the "largest deportation operation" in U.S. history. With an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants currently residing in the U.S., Trump has said, "When I am reelected, we will begin..." his mass deportation campaign. He also plans to end birthright citizenship, calling it “ridiculous.” In pursuit of these goals, Trump is considering declaring a national emergency to access Pentagon resources. While he is expected to issue executive orders to address various aspects of immigration, the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship and potential diplomatic hurdles could complicate his plans.
Trade Wars and Tariffs

Trump is also prepared to escalate trade tensions with key partners. He has proposed a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, alleging their failure to control the flow of drugs and migrants into the U.S. However, experts view this as a possible negotiating tactic rather than an immediate rupture of NAFTA. Additionally, Trump threatens a 10% tariff on Chinese goods, continuing his first-term trade war, citing China’s role in the fentanyl crisis.
January 6 Pardons

Trump has suggested he might pardon those involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, referring to them as "political prisoners" and "hostages." While he has spoken of issuing major pardons, it remains unclear whether he will distinguish between the rioters and those who engaged in violence against law enforcement officers. Over 1,500 people have been charged in connection with the Capitol attack, with many already serving sentences.
Foreign Policy and Diplomacy

Trump has made bold statements on international conflicts. He warned that a "catastrophic" situation could unfold in the Middle East if Hamas failed to release Israeli hostages before his inauguration, despite a ceasefire and deal brokered by the Biden administration. Additionally, Trump promises to swiftly end the war in Ukraine, though his timeline has shifted from an immediate resolution to a plan over several months.
Energy and Climate

As a climate skeptic, Trump vows to prioritize fossil fuel production, echoing his "drill, baby, drill" mantra. He plans to repeal several Biden-era climate policies, including incentives for electric vehicles. Trump also aims to boost offshore drilling, though his success in this area could be hindered by opposition in Congress, particularly after Biden established no-drill zones in U.S. waters.
Transgender Rights and Education

Trump has made clear his intent to reverse policies related to transgender rights. He promised to end "transgender lunacy" by banning transgender individuals from serving in the military and eliminating gender transition procedures for minors. Furthermore, he plans to restrict the teaching of "critical race theory" in schools, targeting federal funding for institutions that adopt such programs.

As Trump begins his second term, the road ahead will likely be marked by legal challenges, domestic opposition, and international scrutiny, as he seeks to fulfill these sweeping promises.
