United Nations chief Antonio Guterres called Saturday for a permanent and immediate ceasefire in Gaza after Israel announced early stages of an intensified operation on the besieged Palestinian territory.

"We need a permanent ceasefire, now," Guterres told leaders gathered in Baghdad for an Arab League summit, reports BSS.

"I am alarmed by reported plans by Israel to expand ground operations and more."
