US President Donald Trump on Tuesday declared that the country was experiencing a historic revival, promising a “turnaround for the ages” in a State of the Union address delivered to a joint session of Congress.
Arriving to loud applause from Republicans, Trump faced a noticeably muted response from Democrats, many of whom remained seated in protest.
“My fellow Americans, our nation is back — bigger, better, richer and stronger than ever before,” he said, portraying his first year of a second term as transformative despite deep political divisions.
The 79-year-old leader used the address to highlight policy achievements and rally support ahead of crucial midterm elections. However, opinion polls show continued public dissatisfaction, raising concerns among Republicans about their narrow majority in the House of Representatives.
Striking a defiant tone, Trump said his administration had delivered unprecedented change within a year. He insisted the country was on a renewed path of strength and prosperity.
On foreign policy, the president emphasised a willingness to pursue peace while warning that the United States would confront threats wherever necessary. Tensions with Iran were among the key concerns, with Washington weighing potential responses to Tehran’s nuclear activities and domestic crackdown.
Domestically, Trump’s agenda has faced setbacks, including a ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States that struck down tariffs central to his economic policy. His administration has also been under pressure from controversies surrounding immigration enforcement actions, a partial government shutdown and lingering political scandals.
Recent surveys suggest declining approval ratings, particularly regarding economic management and inflation, issues likely to dominate the upcoming electoral cycle.
Democrats mounted visible opposition to the speech. Some lawmakers boycotted the event, while others staged silent protests inside the chamber.
The State of the Union address, mandated by the US Constitution, serves as the president’s annual report to Congress and the nation on government priorities and national conditions. As in previous years, both parties invited guests whose presence underscored political messages and ongoing national debates.
Despite the challenges, Trump sought to project confidence, framing his administration as resilient and determined to press ahead with its agenda at home and abroad.
