Thirteen former Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) members were released from Kashimpur High Security Central Jail in Gazipur today after serving 16 years for their involvement in the 2009 BDR massacre.

Abdullah Al Mamun, senior jail superintendent, confirmed their release to The Daily Star at 11:00 am. "The thirteen individuals, among 126 granted bail in the case, were freed at 10:00 am and exited the prison through the main gate, where their families had been waiting eagerly," he said.

The release came after all necessary documents were processed and verified, with no remaining charges against the individuals. Family members celebrated the long-awaited reunion after more than a decade of separation, according to a Gazipur correspondent on the scene.

In total, 126 individuals were granted bail in the case, with 24 expected to be released from Kashimpur Central Jail 1, 89 from Kashimpur Central Jail 2, and 13 from Kashimpur High Security Central Jail.

The 2009 BDR carnage, which took place on February 25-26, resulted in the brutal killings of 74 people, including 57 army officials, at the BDR headquarters in Pilkhana.
