As the 2026 FIFA World Cup draws closer, Bangladesh is once again embracing football fever, with fans expressing their passion in increasingly creative ways.
From giant flags flying across neighbourhoods to lively tea-stall debates over football icons, the tournament has turned into a nationwide celebration that stretches far beyond the pitch.
In the southern district of Patuakhali, one doctor has found a unique way to join the excitement.
Dr Md Habibur Rahman, a pain management specialist and assistant professor of anaesthesiology at Patuakhali Medical College Hospital, has drawn widespread attention after announcing a special World Cup offer for football fans.
Patients visiting his private chamber wearing an Argentina jersey will receive a 50 percent discount on consultation fees during the tournament.
The announcement, shared on his verified Facebook account, quickly went viral, sparking reactions and amusement among football supporters nationwide.
Currently charging Tk600 per consultation at a hospital in Patuakhali town, Dr Habibur said Argentina supporters will pay Tk300 throughout the World Cup period.
“I have supported Argentina since childhood. The World Cup creates a festive atmosphere among people, and this is my way of sharing that joy,” he said.
Residents in Patuakhali said the offer reflects the unique football culture in Bangladesh, where international rivalries often inspire celebrations at the local level.
“Businesses usually offer World Cup promotions, but hearing this from a doctor feels completely different,” said local resident Shakil Islam.
Social media users have also welcomed the idea, widely sharing the post and praising the doctor for adding a light-hearted touch to healthcare services.
For many Bangladeshis, the World Cup is more than a sporting event — it is a cultural phenomenon that brings together people from all walks of life. From students and office workers to teachers, rickshaw pullers and doctors, football becomes a shared language of excitement, debate and unwavering support for favourite teams.
