Rain Drives Green Chilli Price to Tk 300, Vegetables Soar

The price of green chilli in Dhaka’s kitchen markets has shot up by Tk 100 per kg in just a day, reaching Tk 300 to 320 on Thursday, compared to Tk 200 on Wednesday.

Traders said the sudden hike was driven by heavy rainfall that disrupted supplies. “Wholesale prices went up by Tk 100 per kg overnight, so retail prices had to rise too,” said Abdul Hai, a street vendor in Segun Bagicha.

The price surge is not limited to green chilli. Almost all vegetables have become costlier, with most increasing by Tk 10 to 20 per kg. Traders blamed the rain for disrupting harvesting, leaving many farmers unable to collect vegetables from waterlogged fields.

Alauddin Hawlader, a wholesaler, said that vegetables in low-lying areas were submerged, while early winter crops near Dhaka were also damaged. “This late-autumn rain has severely affected supply,” he noted.

As a result, most vegetables are now selling above Tk 80 per kg, squeezing consumers already struggling with rising food costs.
