Hundreds of vehicles have remained stuck on Uttara-Airport Road due to long tailbacks from Thursday morning, causing immense and untold sufferings to passengers.
Vehicles are spending more time to cross the roads. The gridlock has now extended to different areas of the capital. Many people are walking on the roads, leaving the buses. Commuters, especially office-goers are the worst suffers.
Rafiqul Islam, assistant commissioner of Traffic Police Uttara Division, said huge number of people from different districts have come by bus to attend the Bishwa Ijtema, and it has contributed to the worsened traffic situation. We are trying to bring the situation under control, he added.
The first phase of the Bishwa Ijtema, the second largest congregation of Muslims, set to begin on 13 January (Friday) on the bank of the Turag River.
