The Bangladesh Embassy in Libya reported that due to the severe decomposition of the bodies and the absence of identifying documents, their identities remain unconfirmed. However, the local Red Crescent believes all the deceased were likely Bangladeshi migrants.
The bodies were discovered in a region under the jurisdiction of Libya’s Eastern Government, based in Benghazi. The embassy has not yet received permission to visit the site. The 20 victims have already been buried at Ajdadia, about 40 kilometers from Brega.
Earlier, on January 30, the Bangladesh Embassy expressed concern over reports of multiple bodies washing ashore in Brega. Local authorities suspect the victims were migrants whose boat capsized while crossing the Mediterranean Sea.
Tragedy Strikes Again: Two Faridpur Youths Shot Dead in Libya
In a separate incident, two young men from Faridpur’s Bhanga, Hridoy Hawlader (26) and Rasel Howlader (25), were shot and killed in Libya. They had traveled there with promises of being sent to Italy. Their bodies were sent to their families in Bangladesh via WhatsApp by the brokers who had facilitated their journey.
“We have been informed about the incident,” said Md Moksedur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bhanga police. “Legal steps will be taken if the families file complaints.”
Hridoy’s father, Mintu Howlader, explained that he had sent his son to Italy with a payment of Tk 16 lakh to local agents who first took him to Dubai, then Saudi Arabia, and finally Libya. “He was killed there,” said Mintu.
Mokhlesur Rahman, Hridoy’s elder brother, revealed that they had been unable to contact Hridoy for days. “The agents sent us pictures of his body today. Despite receiving the full payment, they demanded more money, and my brother was killed for not paying," he said.
