Court rejects actress Pori Moni’s appeal to cancel narcotics case

A Dhaka court on Monday rejected film actress Pori Moni’s appeal seeking cancellation of a narcotics filed against the her.

Pori Moni’s lawyer Nilanjala Rifat Surovi filed the case in the Tenth Special Judge Court of Dhaka.

After hearing the submissions of both sides, Judge Mohammad Nazrul Islam of the court passed order rejecting the appeal to cancel the process of the narcotics case.

Earlier, the counsel of actress Shamsunnahar Smrity, popularly known as Pori Moni appealed to the court and the plaint says although the law says the case has to be disposed off within 120 working days, but is not mandatory.

Besides, 135 working days has already passed but the court did not get any permission for extension of the time limit.

On the day, RAB-1 ASI Abu Hena Md Mostafa Kamal testified in the case. But the defense lawyer sought time to cross-examine the witness while the acceded to the appeal and fixed December 15 for cross-examination.

On August 4, last year, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided the Banani residence of Pori Moni and reportedly seized various types of narcotics. Later, she was arrested and taken to the RAB headquarters. RAB-1, filed a case against Pori Moni under the Narcotics Act.

On August 5, Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid of Dhaka CMM Court granted a four-day remand of actress Pori Moni in the case.

Later, on August 10 of that year, Metropolitan Magistrate Debabrata Biswas of the CMM court granted another two-day remand of the actress.

On August 31 of last year, Pori Moni was granted bail in the case filed under the Narcotics Control Act. She was quizzed for seven days in three times in the case. 

On August 31, of last year, Metropolitan Session’s Judge Court of Dhaka granted her bail in the case. - Special Correspondent
