Dr Zubaida Rahman, Vice-Chairperson of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, on Saturday called for transforming Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) into a centre of innovation, international collaboration, research excellence and compassionate leadership while building on its rich legacy.
She made the remarks as the special guest at an interactive session titled "DMCians' Thoughts on the Modernisation of Bangladesh's Healthcare System" at the Dhaka Medical College (DMC) auditorium, held as part of the institution's anniversary celebrations.
Recalling her days as a physician and former student of Dhaka Medical College, Dr Zubaida Rahman said that despite rapid advances in medical technology, people must always remain at the heart of healthcare.
"No matter how technology-driven medical science becomes, human beings always remain at its centre. The true foundation of the medical profession is humanity. Many times, a few reassuring words from a physician work like medicine for a patient," she said.
In an emotional address, she said she had not returned to Dhaka Medical College Hospital since leaving her job.
Reflecting on her experience in the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, she said she had witnessed the suffering of underprivileged patients firsthand.
"We want Dhaka Medical College Hospital to become a centre of excellence and compassion where every patient receives the highest standard of treatment along with empathy and dignity," she said.
Expressing optimism about the institution's future, Dr Zubaida said she hoped Dhaka Medical College would emerge as one of South Asia's leading centres for medical education, research and innovation over the next two decades.
"Today we are spread across different parts of the world. Our professions may differ, but our roots are the same—Dhaka Medical College. The time has come for us to be united not only by shared memories but also by a shared sense of responsibility," she said.
She stressed that the true strength of an institution lies not in its infrastructure but in its people.
"The greatest asset of Dhaka Medical College is its talent, values and its people," she said.
Highlighting the human dimension of healthcare, Dr Zubaida noted that behind every medical breakthrough is a person, a family and a life, and urged physicians to foster cooperation and mutual support despite professional competition.
