Govt postpones proposal on forming Padma, Meghna divisions

The government today postponed a proposal to constitute two new divisions naming after the country's two major rivers -"Padma and Meghna divisions".

The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reforms (NICAR) held at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) here with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Speaking at a press conference at the Secretariat after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam said the proposal has been suspended as a huge amount of money will be required to implement it.

Considering the current economic scenario, he said, the decision of forming two new administrative Padma and Meghna divisions have been held aiming to minimise expenditure.

Besides, the cabinet secretary said, the meeting approved the proposal of turning Satkhira's Shyamnagar upazila into a municipality, reports BSS.

He said decisions were also taken to demark the boundaries of Bogura and Jamalpur districts, relocate Islami University thana and increasing the boundary of Nandail municipality in Mymensigh.
