Dhaka, Jan 10 - The historic Homecoming Day of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed across Bangladesh on Wednesday.
On January 10, 1972, Bangabandhu set foot on the soil of independent Bangladesh, following his release after over nine and a half months of captivity in a Pakistan jail.
Bangabandhu inspired the Bengali nation. He was the inspiration of the freedom fighters.
Under his undaunted leadership, the Bengali nation earned the ultimate victory through the nine-month Liberation War in 1971. The defeated Pakistani rulers were finally compelled to release Bangabandhu from jail.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today paid tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the occasion of his historic Homecoming Day.
She paid homage by placing wreaths at the portrait of the Father of the Nation in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.
After laying the wreaths, the Prime Minister stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of Bangabandhu, the architect of independent Bangladesh.
Her younger sister Sheikh Rehana was present beside her; both offered Fateha and munajat.
Later, flanked by senior party leaders, Sheikh Hasina, also president of Awami League, paid tribute to Bangabandhu by placing another wreath at the portrait of the Father of the Nation on behalf of her party.
On this day in 1972, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman returned to independent and sovereign Bangladesh after over nine and half months of captivity in a Pakistan jail.
Since then, the nation observes the day as the Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina released a commemorative postage stamp, a first-day cover and a data card, marking the historic Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The Prime Minister released the stamp and the first-day cover worth Tk 10 and the data card of Tk 5 at her official residence Ganobhaban.
A special canceller was used on the occasion, PM’s deputy press secretary KM Shakhawat Moon said.
The stamp, the first-day cover and the data card will be sold from the Philatelic Bureau of Dhaka GPO today. Those will also be available at other GPOs and head post offices across the country later.
There is also an arrangement for special canceller in four GPOs to be used for the first-day cover.
