Authorities have declared a holiday in at least 60 readymade garment (RMG) factories in Ashulia, Savar, following a surge of worker protests on Wednesday.

The protests began early in the morning along the Bypail-Abdullahpur road, with workers leaving their factories to take to the streets instead of starting their shifts. The demonstrations, which stretched from Bypail to Zirobo, were driven by demands for better working conditions and other grievances.

In response to the escalating situation, factory authorities started declaring holidays for the affected factories one by one. Md Sarwar Alam, Superintendent of Industrial Police-1, confirmed the closures, stating they were necessary to manage the growing unrest.

This latest protest comes on the heels of an earlier demonstration on September 2, where unemployed workers blocked major roads, demanding equal recruitment opportunities for men and women in Ashulia's garment sector. That protest led to at least 30 factories declaring holidays as well.

Heightened security measures, including military and law enforcement presence, have been put in place to maintain order during the ongoing protests.
