85 Bangladeshi Nationals Return Home from Myanmar
Eighty-five Bangladeshi nationals returned home on Saturday from Sittwe Port in Rakhine, Myanmar. They were transported by the Myanmar Naval Ship ‘UMS Chin Dwin,’ which is also visiting Bangladesh to repatriate members of the Myanmar defense force displaced by conflict.
The ship is expected to arrive in Cox’s Bazar early on September 29, 2024. Among the returnees, 26 were held in Mawlamyine prison, 16 in Pathein prison, and 3 in Kyaikmaraw prison, while the remainder were from Rakhine.
Most returnees (56) hail from Cox’s Bazar, Narayanganj, and Narsingdi, with others from Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari, Noakhali, and Dhaka.
This repatriation was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Bangladesh Embassy in Yangon and the Bangladesh Consulate in Sittwe, which have facilitated the return of 332 Bangladeshi nationals over the past 15 months. The last group returned on June 8, 2024, when 45 Bangladeshis were successfully repatriated after thorough identity verification and coordination with local authorities.
