Postgraduate trainee doctors have blocked the Shahbagh intersection, demanding a raise in their monthly allowance or a shift to the 9th-grade pay scale, causing significant traffic congestion in the area.

The doctors, from various parts of the country, gathered at the BSMMU hospital and took position at the intersection around 1 p.m. They are calling for an increase in their allowance from Tk 25,000 to Tk 50,000.

Protestors have vowed to remain at the site until they receive assurances from authorities regarding their demands.

Mahmudul Bashar, a trainee doctor in the Medicine Department at BSMMU, said, "We currently receive Tk 25,000, but it's often delayed. It's insufficient for survival. Given the circumstances, we deserve at least Tk 50,000."

Bashar added that the Doctors Movement for Justice Society, along with the Postgraduate Private Trainee Doctors Association, has been protesting for an allowance hike since 2022.

"We've been informed that the issue is still pending at the Ministry of Finance. Despite repeated ultimatums, no effective action has been taken," he said.
