Gazipur, 31 Jan — A 60-year-old devotee passed away at the Ijtema venue in Tongi of Gazipur on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Kuddus Gazi, a resident of Dumuria upazila of Khulna.

Habibullah Raihan, coordinator of the Biswa Ijtema media cell, said that Kuddus Gazi fell ill while in bed around 10:45 am on Friday and died on the spot.

His namaz-e-janaza was held at the Ijtema ground following Jumma prayers, and his body will be taken to his village, added Habibullah.

The 58th edition of the Biswa Ijtema, on the banks of the Turag River in Gazipur’s Tongi, began earlier this morning, with tens of thousands of devotees from home and abroad in attendance.

The formal opening of the religious gathering took place after Maghrib prayer on Thursday, with sermons delivered by Indian scholar Maulana Ibrahim Deolar.
