Railway Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam on Tuesday announced a 25 percent fare concession for persons with disabilities, students and citizens aged above 65 on metro rail and all other railway services.

The minister said the benefit would be introduced soon, though it may take some time before the concession becomes effective. He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the Secretariat.

When asked whether freedom fighters would be included under the same scheme, he said the matter had not been discussed.

The concession will also be integrated into the online ticketing system, allowing eligible passengers to select the discounted option while purchasing tickets.

To avail the benefit, passengers aged 65 and above must present their national identity cards at the time of purchase and during onboard checks. Students will need to show valid student ID cards, while persons with disabilities must display government-issued disability identification cards.

The minister said the government is continuing efforts to modernise the railway sector, focusing on improving service quality and increasing train speeds to reduce travel time.

Ahead of Eid, he said plans are in place to operate 85 to 86 locomotives daily to maintain regular schedules and accommodate additional passenger pressure.

“If we can operate that number of locomotives, it will be possible to keep schedules intact and carry extra passengers. There will be no scope for disruption,” he said.

He also warned that no excess fares would be tolerated during Eid travel. Meetings have been held with bus and launch owners’ associations, who have pledged not to raise fares.

“They are under strict monitoring, and this will be enforced at any cost,” he said, expressing hope that Eid travel will remain smooth and comfortable with everyone’s cooperation.
