Journalists across Pakistan observed a “black day” on January 31, staging protests against the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) Amendment Act 2025 in all provinces.

The demonstrations followed President Asif Ali Zardari’s signing of the bill into law despite opposition from political parties, journalist bodies, and human rights organizations.

In Islamabad, journalists gathered at the National Press Club, with PFUJ President Afzal Butt calling for continued protests. Similar demonstrations were held in Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar, where journalist unions condemned the amendments as an attempt to suppress press freedom. – Pakistan Press Foundation
