Veteran journalist and former president of both the Khulna Press Club and the Khulna Journalists’ Union, Monirul Huda, passed away on Friday in Dhaka. He was 89.

Huda had been battling illness for an extended period.

A pioneering figure in Bangladeshi journalism, Monirul Huda began his career in the 1950s with Dainik Pakistan, which later became Dainik Bangla. Over the decades, he held key leadership roles, including as a leader of the undivided Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists.

Outside the newsroom, Huda made significant contributions to public service and civic life. He served as vice-chairman of the Khulna Municipality, practiced tax law, and was a senior member of the Rotary Club.

His death has left a profound impact on the journalistic and civic communities. Numerous social, political, and cultural organisations in Khulna have expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.
