Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom has started pilot production at a new radiopharmaceutical plant in the Kaluga Region, with two manufacturing lines now commissioned in compliance with Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. The plant is scheduled to reach its design capacity in 2028 and is expected to reduce import dependence and strengthen Russia’s domestic radiopharmaceutical industry.
The facility will manufacture radiopharmaceuticals based on radionuclides including radium-223 and actinium-225. Radium-223 is used primarily to treat cancer patients with bone metastases, while actinium-225 is an alpha emitter used in targeted cancer therapy.
The facility features Russian-made automated synthesis modules capable of producing at least 100 vials of radiopharmaceuticals per shift. Rosatom said automation will improve batch consistency, reduce human error and support the development of new medicines.
The plant also includes an automated system for the safe storage and handling of radioactive waste using robotic equipment. Rosatom said the facility will establish a complete production cycle, from isotope production to finished pharmaceuticals. – Press release
