Baharul Alam assumes role as new IGP

Baharul will serve as IGP on a two-year term on contractual basis

Dhaka, Nov 21 - Baharul Alam has officially assumed his role as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), succeeding outgoing IGP Md Moinul Islam. The ceremonial handover took place on Thursday at the police headquarters in Dhaka, where the new IGP was greeted with a guard of honour by a contingent of police officers.

Appointed by the interim government on November 20, Baharul will serve a two-year term on a contractual basis. A seasoned law enforcement officer, he began his career in the Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent of Police on January 21, 1986, after passing the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination.

Baharul brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the chief of the Special Branch (SB) and as Additional IGP at the police headquarters. Internationally, he has a distinguished record in peacekeeping and advisory roles. From 2009 to 2013, he served as a Senior Police Liaison Officer at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. In 2015, he worked as a Senior Police Adviser for the UN peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan. Additionally, he has participated in field missions in Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, and Sierra Leone, further solidifying his credentials in global policing efforts.

After retiring from active service in 2020, Baharul's reappointment as IGP marks his return to the forefront of national law enforcement.-UNB
