Tofail Ahmed, the veteran politician and a primary architect of the 1969 Mass Uprising, passed away at the age of 82 today. A titan of Bangladesh’s political history who famously bestowed the title "Bangabandhu" upon Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Tofail Ahmed breathed his last at 3:30 pm at Square Hospital in Dhaka while undergoing treatment for prolonged age-related complications.

Hospital authorities confirmed that the senior leader had been receiving intensive care since late September last year, suffering from pneumonia-related breathing difficulties, heart disease, and severe physical weakness. His passing marks the end of an era for a man who served as a Member of Parliament nine times and held several ministerial portfolios throughout a career spanning over six decades.

Born in 1943 in Bhola, Tofail Ahmed rose to national prominence as a fiery student leader. As the Vice President of DUCSU between 1967 and 1969, he became the face of the popular resistance against military rule. His leadership during the 1969 uprising was so instrumental that international media at the time described him as the "virtual Governor" of East Pakistan. It was Tofail who, on February 23, 1969, officially conferred the title "Bangabandhu" (Friend of Bengal) upon Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at a massive public rally following the leader's release from jail.

Despite his unwavering loyalty to the Awami League and his role as a key organizer of the 1971 Liberation War, Tofail Ahmed’s relationship with Sheikh Hasina was characterized by periods of notable distance. Following the 2008 general election, he was famously dropped from the cabinet despite being one of the most influential members of the party's Presidium. While he later returned to serve as Commerce Minister from 2014 to 2019, he was often seen as being sidelined from the inner circle of power during critical transitions.

The final years of Tofail Ahmed’s life were fraught with hardship following the political upheaval of 2024. In February 2025, his ancestral home, "Priyo Kutir," in Bhola was vandalized and set on fire.

As news of his death spreads, a controversy has emerged regarding his final resting place. While family sources state that Tofail Ahmed expressed a wish to be buried in his native Bhola next to his mother, sources indicate the current interim administration is pressuring the family for a restricted burial at the Banani graveyard in Dhaka to prevent a massive public gathering.

Tofail Ahmed leaves behind a daughter and a legacy as one of the most eloquent parliamentarians and iconic figures in the struggle for a sovereign Bangladesh.
