Acting President Urges Unity on National Interest

Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram on Wednesday called for national unity on issues of national interest, democratic values, and the country's independence and sovereignty, saying differences of opinion are natural in a democracy but should never undermine the nation's core interests.

Speaking at a reception and discussion for the families of those killed and the July fighters at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka, he urged the nation to seize what he described as a historic opportunity to build a democratic, just and corruption-free Bangladesh where every citizen enjoys equal rights and dignity.

Describing the July Mass Uprising as a turning point in the country's history, the Acting President said the nation must remain vigilant so that division, hatred and narrow interests do not obstruct national progress.

Drawing a parallel between the 1971 Liberation War and the July Mass Uprising, he said the Liberation War was fought to establish democracy, while the July movement sought to restore it.

"Election is an inseparable part of democracy. As long as democracy exists, people will enjoy freedom of expression, and the country's independence and sovereignty will remain intact," he said.

Hafiz Uddin said ensuring the welfare of the families of those killed during the July uprising and providing treatment and rehabilitation for the injured are among the government's highest priorities.

"The government's foremost duty is to care for the families of those who sacrificed their lives in July. It is also our sacred responsibility to restore the health of those who lost their eyesight or limbs," he said.

Calling the July Mass Uprising Day an unforgettable chapter in the nation's history, he said the movement marked the victory of freedom-seeking students and citizens in their struggle for democracy, justice and human dignity.

The Acting President paid tribute to those who lost their lives during the uprising, saying their sacrifices would continue to inspire future generations.

Recalling an emotional moment from the event, he said he was deeply moved after meeting a young man who lost his eyesight during the movement, stressing that those who sacrificed for democracy deserve dignity and proper support.

Addressing the July fighters, he assured them that the government would continue to work for their welfare and ensure they receive the respect they deserve.

He also urged citizens to help strengthen democracy by holding the government accountable whenever it makes mistakes.

Reaffirming his commitment to democratic governance, Hafiz Uddin said he remained dedicated to working for good governance and lasting democracy in Bangladesh.

Concluding his speech, he called on all citizens to uphold the spirit of the July Mass Uprising and work together to build a discrimination-free, democratic, just, humane and prosperous Bangladesh while safeguarding the country's dignity.

Earlier, the Acting President presented honorary crests to representatives of the families of the July martyrs and the July fighters.

The programme, chaired by Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan, was attended by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraq Hossain as special guests. Representatives of several political and civic organisations also joined the event.
